9. Assessment van psychopathologie: categorisch of dimensioneel?

Integratie van modellen

In de classificerende diagnostiek van psychopathologie bij kinderen kunnen van oudsher twee perspectieven worden onderscheiden: het categorische perspectief en het dimensionele. Beide hebben voor- en nadelen. Het categorische perspectief is op het eerste zicht duidelijk, maar erg reducerend en zwart-wit. Het dimensionele perspectief houdt rekening met de ontwikkeling van kinderen en met de normale variatie in probleemgedrag, maar leidt tot een minder scherpe diagnostische besluitvorming. In deze bijdrage worden beide perspectieven beschreven en kritisch tegenover elkaar geplaatst. Van elk perspectief wordt één prototypisch classificatiesysteem nader belicht: het DSM-5-systeem (categorisch) en het ASEBA-systeem (dimensioneel). Recente ontwikkelingen in deze systemen worden beschreven. Daarbij valt op dat beide systemen de laatste jaren steeds verder naar elkaar toe zijn gegroeid en het onderscheid categorisch-dimensioneel in de classificerende diagnostiek van psychopathologie bij kinderen erg relatief is geworden.
