11. Anticonceptie voor de eenentwintigste eeuw

Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk komen de recente ontwikkelingen rond anticonceptiemogelijkheden aan bod. Een hiervan is het toenemende gebruik van long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). Dit zijn middelen zoals intra-uteriene apparaten en implantaten die voor meerdere jaren een goede anticonceptieve betrouwbaarheid bieden en waarvan de anticonceptieve werking na extractie snel omkeerbaar is. De toenemende populariteit van LARC betekent echter zeker niet dat er geen plaats meer is voor de zogenoemde ‘user-based’ omkeerbare methoden zoals pillen, pleisters en ringen (PPR) of natuurlijke vormen van family planning. Ook sterilisatie, een in principe onomkeerbare vorm van anticonceptie, blijft een goede keuze voor sommige paren. Het is aan de gebruiker om, na counseling door een zorgverlener over de betrouwbaarheid, de voordelen maar ook mogelijke bijwerkingen en nadelen, een geïnformeerde keuze te maken. Hoewel postcoïtale anticonceptie vlot beschikbaar, betrouwbaar en veilig is, wordt het erg weinig gebruikt ter preventie van ongewenste zwangerschappen.
