Angstaanjagende voorlichting: niet effectief, maar desondanks wordt het nog gebruikt

Samenvatting

In de publieke gezondheidzorg willen we terecht evidence-based werken. Deze evidentie bestaat idealiter uit reviews en meta-analyses. Tegelijkertijd worden uitkomsten van dergelijke kennissyntheses niet altijd ter harte genomen. Onze recente meta-analyse over angstaanjagende voorlichting, gepubliceerd in Health Psychology Review, ¹ heeft de discussie opnieuw doen oplaaien over de effectiviteit van angstaanjagende voorlichting. In deze bijdrage lichten we de wetenschappelijke evidentie kort toe (kort samengevat: angstaanjagende voorlichting is meestal geen goed idee), waarna we ingaan op (foutieve) overwegingen of argumenten uit de praktijk om deze evidentie terzijde te schuiven en een voorkeur voor angstaanjagende voorlichting te handhaven. In een volgende bijdrage beschrijven we een keur aan alternatieve methoden voor gedragsverandering die de risico’s van angstaanjagende voorlichting niet in zich dragen.
