Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk wordt een korte samenvatting gegeven van de belangrijkste anatomische structuren die een rol spelen bij het functioneren van het kauwstelsel. Gezien de nauwe relatie, die er bestaat tussen vorm en functie van het kauwstelsel is een goed inzicht hiervan belangrijk voor een goed begrip van normale en afwijkende bewegingsfuncties. Eerst worden de belangrijkste spieren beschreven. De krachten die ze kunnen leveren, en de daarmee samenhangende contracties leiden direct of indirect tot bewegingen en belastingen van het kauwstelsel. Intensief gebruik kan daarnaast leiden tot spiervermoeidheid en pijn. Naast een anatomische beschrijving wordt een korte samenvatting gegeven van de innervatie. Daarna wordt het temporomandibulaire gewricht beschreven. Als het kauwstelsel wordt belast, functioneert dit als steunpunt. Daarnaast helpt het de onderkaakbewegingen te geleiden. In dit gewricht wordt een grote belastbaarheid gecombineerd met een grote beweeglijkheid. Hierdoor, maar ook door zijn constructie kan dit gewricht tot een van de meest bijzondere van het menselijk lichaam worden gerekend. Het hoofdstuk wordt afgesloten met een korte analyse van de nauwe relatie tussen vorm en functie in het kauwstelsel.
