2. Anatomie en fysiologie van de ademhaling

Samenvatting

Met de ademhaling wordt zuurstof opgenomen en getransporteerd naar de weefsels, waar het gebruikt wordt bij de verbranding van voedingsstoffen. Hierbij wordt energie vrijgemaakt en ontstaat kooldioxide dat vervolgens naar de longen getransporteerd wordt om daar te worden uitgescheiden. Daarnaast speelt de ademhaling een belangrijke rol bij het in stand houden van het zuur-base-evenwicht, de verdediging tegen vreemde stoffen en micro-organismen, de vochthuishouding en de spraak. Hoewel de longen vaak als symbool voor de ademhaling worden gebruikt, zijn hierbij veel meer organen, structuren en processen betrokken. Denk hierbij aan het centraal zenuwstelsel, luchtwegen, thoraxwand en processen als diffusie, ventilatie, circulatie en stofwisseling. De kwaliteit, de onderlinge samenwerking en afstemming van al deze organen, structuren en processen zijn bepalend voor de uiteindelijke kwaliteit van de ademhaling.
