Alcoholisme: een chronische recidiverende ziekte?

Het beloop van alcoholgerelateerde stoornissen in de algemene bevolking

Samenvatting

Eens een alcoholist, altijd een alcoholist? Studies naar het beloop van alcoholisme binnen gespecialiseerde instellingen voor verslavingszorg lijken deze vraag bevestigend te beantwoorden. Echter, de overgrote meerderheid van de mensen met een alcoholprobleem zoekt geen gespecialiseerde hulp. Hoe zorgelijk is dat eigenlijk, zijn deze mensen allemaal chronisch verslaafd? In dit artikel wordt het één- en driejaars beloop beschreven van alcoholisme in een grote, representatieve steekproef uit de algemene bevolking. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat het beloop in de algemene bevolking veel gunstiger is: 81-85% van de mensen met alcoholmisbruik herstelt en ook alcoholafhankelijkheid gaat in 67-74% van de gevallen weer over. Slechts een kleine minderheid valt terug
