Samenvatting

Een op de tien Nederlanders drinkt geregeld alcohol. Met geregeld alcoholgebruik wordt bedoeld dat er meer dan 21 glazen per week worden genuttigd door mannen en meer dan 14 glazen per week door vrouwen. Ongeveer 11% van de bevolking boven de leeftijd van 12 jaar wordt gedefinieerd als een zwaar alcoholgebruiker (minstens 1 dag per week 6 of meer glazen alcohol). Het betreft 4,5 keer zo vaak mannen als vrouwen. Alcoholmisbruik of -afhankelijkheid komt voor bij ongeveer 800.000 mensen in de leeftijd van 18 tot 65 jaar. Hieronder vallen 260.000 zware drinkers, van wie ongeveer 3% een korsakovsyndroom ontwikkelt. Over alcoholmisbruik en -afhankelijk- heid bij ouderen zijn geen betrouwbare cijfers bekend.
