Afgunst en jaloezie in psychotherapie

Samenvatting

Afgunst en jaloezie zijn krachtige en pijnlijke gevoelens die tussen mensen kunnen spelen. Het zijn relationele en zelfbewuste emoties, waarbij bedreiging van het zelfbeeld en zelfgevoel een belangrijke rol speelt. In het dagelijks taalgebruik worden de begrippen vaak als synoniem gebruikt, maar er zijn duidelijke redenen om ze conceptueel van elkaar te onderscheiden. Beide gevoelens kunnen gezien worden langs een spectrum van normaal tot pathologisch. Afgunst en jaloezie blijven in psychotherapie vaak verborgen, doordat ze met schaamte en schuldgevoel beladen zijn. Dit geldt niet alleen voor de patiënt, maar ook voor de therapeut. Bewustwording van deze gevoelens is belangrijk, om ze te kunnen onderzoeken en te leren ermee om te gaan. Dit artikel begint met een definiëring van de begrippen afgunst en jaloezie. Daarna wordt de psychodynamiek van afgunst en jaloezie besproken en hoe beide gevoelens zich kunnen manifesteren. De relatie tussen jaloezie en gehechtheidsstijl wordt onderzocht en toegelicht. Binnen de therapie kunnen afgunst en jaloezie in de interactie tussen patiënt en therapeut een rol gaan spelen. Ten slotte worden vier niveaus besproken waarop deze gevoelens in de behandeling kunnen worden onderzocht.
