Samenvatting

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is een psychiatrische classificatie die op basis van gedragssymptomen wordt vastgesteld. Voor de classificatie is een neuropsychologisch onderzoek niet altijd nodig. Toch is het informatief om een dergelijk onderzoek te doen. In dit hoofdstuk wordt toegelicht waarom dit onderzoek relevant kan zijn en worden de belangrijkste cognitieve ADHD-theorieën besproken die essentieel zijn voor het begrijpen van het brede scala van problemen die volwassenen met ADHD ervaren in het dagelijks leven. De focus ligt hierbij op de arousaltheorie, de rol van executieve functies en de motivationele theorie. Aan de hand van casus R., een 27-jarige man bij wie er een vermoeden is van ADHD, worden de belangrijkste overwegingen rond het neuropsychologisch onderzoek bij ADHD besproken.

Emotionele impulsiviteit komt voort uit onvoldoende zelfcontrole over emoties en kenmerkt zich bijvoorbeeld door ongeduldigheid, prikkelbaarheid, snel boos worden, of gemakkelijk gestimuleerd worden door prikkels uit de omgeving.

In deze sectie wordt verwezen naar een aantal onderzoekers (o. a. Zentall & Zentall, Douglas, Quay, Sergeant, Barkley, Sonuga-Barke) die voor het eerst bepaalde cognitieve theorieën over ADHD hebben beschreven. Deze theorieën hebben nog steeds een grote invloed op de huidige theorievorming. Om het aantal referenties in deze sectie te beperken, verwijzen we voor de precieze literatuurreferenties naar het overzichtsartikel van Luman et al. (2005).

Een defaultnetwerk (vertaald: ‘terugvalnetwerk’) is een netwerk van gebieden in de hersenen dat vooral actief is in een toestand van rust, waarin men niet op gebeurtenissen in de buitenwereld is gericht (Raichle et al. (2007).

Er zijn op het vlak van ADHD vele boeken geschreven over zowel diagnostiek als behandeling. Enkele daarvan richten zich op zowel kinderen als volwassenen en enkele alleen op volwassenen. De meest recente (en in Nederland bekende) boeken zijn hier weergegeven.
