Abstract

Twee kernstoornissen van het psychiatrisch ziektebeeld Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(adhd) worden al aangeduid in de naam: gestoorde aandacht en hyperactiviteit. Een derde kernstoornis is (te grote) impulsiviteit, het onvermogen om niet adequaat gedrag te inhiberen. De stoornissen komen lang niet altijd alle drie tegelijk bij adhd-patiënten voor. Vandaar dat er op basis van dsm-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,apa, 1994) drie adhd-subtypen worden onderscheiden: een voornamelijk aandachtsgestoord type, een voornamelijk hyperactief/impulsief type en een gecombineerd type. Het is de vraag of deze kernstoornissen uniek zijn voor adhd, maar deze vraag zal in dit artikel niet worden be sproken. Wel is aan de orde in welke mate de kernstoornissen succesvol kunnen worden behandeld met Ritalin (methylfenidaat, mph).
