Addendum: kanaalstenose van de lumbale wervelkolom

Samenvatting

Een kanaalstenose is een vernauwing van het wervelkanaal die leidt tot compressie van een of meer zenuwwortels die zich bevinden in het wervelkanaal, de recessus lateralis of in het foramen intervertebrale.1 De verschijnselen kunnen segmentaal of extrasegmentaal van karakter zijn, afhankelijk van de exacte lokalisatie. In zeldzame gevallen gaat een lumbale stenose samen met een cervicale stenose: na behandeling van de ene lokalisatie wordt meestal pas het andere probleem duidelijk.2

Stenose: vernauwing

Recessus: lege holte, nis. Met de recessus lateralis wordt het laterale deel van het wervelkanaal bedoeld: de overgang van het wervelkanaal naar het foramen intervertebrale.

Claudicatio: mank lopen. Eigenlijk is dit niet zo’n geschikte term voor neurogene en vasculaire claudicatio, aangezien men meestal niet mank gaat lopen als gevolg van deze aandoeningen. Wel moet men stoppen met lopen als gevolg van pijn of vermoeidheid in een of beide benen.

Van de behandelde patiënten had 75% goede resultaten op lange termijn.
