Samenvatting

Als men na klinisch rugonderzoek een diagnose stelt, is men geneigd om deze te laten bevestigen met beeldvormende technieken. Dit hoofdstuk maakt duidelijk dat wat bij klinisch onderzoek gevonden wordt, lang niet altijd bevestigd kan worden door beeldvorming. De beeldvormende technieken zijn hier vaak niet geschikt voor. Daar komt nog bij dat regelmatig zaken gevonden worden die geen verband houden met de symptomen van de patiënt. Ten slotte blijkt dat vroege beeldvorming leidt tot een langere duur en ernst van de aandoening vanwege bezorgdheid van de patiënt en onnodige behandelingen.

P. acnes: een stafylokok die bij iedereen vanaf de geboorte aanwezig is op de huid. Een onschuldige uitingsvorm is acne ofwel jeugdpuistjes. De bacterie kan echter ook postoperatieve infecties van kunstgewrichten of hartkleppen veroorzaken.
