33. Active ageing: actief ouder worden

Samenvatting

Active ageing is een multidimensionaal concept dat activiteit, gezondheid, zelfstandigheid en productiviteit van ouderen omvat. Inactiviteit leidt wereldwijd tot veel chronische ziekten en een hoge morbiditeit. Regelmatige fysieke activiteit zorgt voor aanzienlijke gezondheidgerelateerde voordelen in alle leeftijdscategorieën. Een actievere leefstijl leidt niet alleen tot het verlagen van de incidentie van ‘zware’ aandoeningen zoals kanker, hart- en vaatziekten of dementie, maar ook tot het verminderen van ‘lichtere’ aandoeningen zoals somberheid, angst, pijn, overgewicht of slaapproblemen. Het is voor ouderen belangrijk actief te blijven en te participeren in de maatschappij. Een nieuwe visie op de ouderenzorg zal pas effectief geïmplementeerd kunnen worden als attitudes en mentaliteiten ten aanzien van ouderen veranderen. Het grote belang van active en healthy ageing ligt in preventie (primair, secundair en tertiair). Eden Alternative is een nieuwe filosofie voor de verpleeghuiszorg, die leidt tot een duidelijke vermindering in zorggebruik, minder medicatie en minder externe opnamen.
