18. Acceptance and commitment therapy

Samenvatting

Pijn hoort bij het leven. Wanneer pogingen om pijn te controleren of te bestrijden niet of niet afdoende slagen, maakt dit verdrietig, machteloos en opstandig. Dit leidt op den duur tot meer klachten en beperkingen. Bovendien komen patiënten in hun gevecht met de steeds terugkerende pijn dikwijls niet meer toe aan dat wat het leven voor hen de moeite waard maakt. In acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) richten patiënten zich hier weer op, stoppen ze het gevecht tegen de pijn en merken dat dit ruimte geeft om te doen waar het in hun leven om draait. ACT is gebaseerd op de relational frame theory (RFT). Dit is een ontwikkeling binnen de psychologische leertheorieën die de verbale vermogens van mensen centraal stelt. In dit hoofdstuk gaan we in op de wetenschappelijke evidentie voor ACT, leggen we het klinische model van ACT uit, illustreren we een aantal oefeningen aan de hand van een casus en geven tips en valkuilen bij de toepassing van ACT.
