9 Atheroomcyste

Samenvatting

Atheroomcysten zijn vaak voorkomende, doorgaans langzaam in grootte toenemende, dermale bolvormige zwellingen, die meestal cosmetisch ontsierend zijn.¹ Wanneer atheroomcysten geïnfecteerd raken, treden er ook andere verschijnselen op. De cyste heeft een epidermale wand en bevat talg, keratine en andere afbraakproducten. In de Amerikaanse literatuur is deze laesie bekend als sebaceous cyst, hoewel deze benoeming eigenlijk niet juist is. Tegenwoordig wordt ook de benaming ‘epidermoïdcyste’ gebruikt.
