Samenvatting

Er is sprake van een plotselinge uitbraak van ziekte als het aantal nieuwe ziektegevallen dat men in een bepaalde situatie en in een relatief korte tijd waarneemt aanzienlijk groter is dan men zou verwachten. Eigenlijk is dit ook de definitie van een epidemie, maar toch prefereren veel epidemiologen die term voor meer grootschalige en geografisch meer uitgebreide stijgingen van de ziekte-incidentie.
