7,0 Tesla MRI van het brein: modeverschijnsel of toekomstperspectief?

Samenvatting

Sinds de introductie ervan in de kliniek in de jaren tachtig is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) een belangrijke techniek geworden om het menselijk brein in beeld te brengen. Met deze techniek worden beelden verkregen met een sterk statisch magneetveld (B 0 -veld) en radiofrequente pulsen (RF-pulsen). In het magneetveld raakt het lichaam netto een klein beetje gemagnetiseerd door het uitlijnen van de (magnetische) kernen van waterstofatomen (protonen) in het lichaam aan dat magneetveld. Vervolgens brengt een RF-puls de protonen uit hun uitgelijnde positie (excitatie), en terwijl de protonen terugkomen (relaxeren) van naar de evenwichtstoestand geven ze een signaal af dat wordt opgevangen met behulp van ontvangstspoelen. Door naast het B 0 -veld een (spatieel) variërend zwak magnetisch veld (gradiëntveld) in meerdere richtingen toe te passen, kan worden bepaald waar het signaal vandaan komt, zodat een afbeelding kan worden gemaakt. Omdat weefsels een verschillende protondichtheid en structuur hebben, zullen de protonen in het ene weefsel sneller en in het andere weefsel minder snel weer terugkeren naar hun oorspronkelijke stand. Dit verschil wordt uitgedrukt in de T 1 -, T 2 - en T 2 *-relaxatietijden.
