Samenvatting

In Nederland wordt 30 procent van de sterfgevallen veroorzaakt door kanker. In 2008 overleden voor het eerst meer mensen aan kanker dan aan hart- en vaatziekten. Bij mannen is kanker al sinds 2005 de belangrijkste doodsoorzaak (zie www.cbs.nl). Volgens cijfers van de Nederlandse Kankerregistratie werden in Nederland in 2009 ongeveer 90.000 nieuwe gevallen van kanker vastgesteld. De totale twintigjaarsprevalentie van kanker omvatte 544.000 personen; dit zijn mensen bij wie ooit kanker is vastgesteld en die nog in leven zijn.
