Samenvatting

Letsels van de buik kunnen worden onderverdeeld in scherpe (penetrerende) en stompe letsels. In de meeste Europese landen is het percentage ongevalspatiënten dat wordt opgenomen ten gevolge van een scherp letsel, ongeveer 15%; in de Verenigde Staten is dat 30 tot 35%. Ongeveer 30% van de patiënten die worden opgenomen na een stomp trauma, heeft buikletsel; minder dan 10% moet een laparotomie ondergaan.
