4 Motorische ontwikkeling

B De motorische ontwikkeling van de zuigeling

Samenvatting

Onze kennis over de structurele en functionele ontwikkeling van het menselijke zenuwstelsel is beperkt. Mede daardoor is er sprake van een voortdurende discussie over de rol van aanleg en omgeving en mede daardoor zijn er vele theorieën over de motorische ontwikkeling.1 Hierna worden de theorieën die het meest in de belangstelling staan besproken.

De begrippen variatie en variabiliteit worden in de literatuur meestal als synoniemen van elkaar beschouwd. Hadders-Algra definieerde variatie in het domein van de motoriek als de aanwezigheid van een repertoire aan mogelijkheden en variabiliteit als het vermogen om uit het repertoire van motorische mogelijkheden een bij de situatie passende strategie te kiezen.7 Variabiliteit zegt dus iets over het aanpassingsvermogen, de adaptabiliteit. De door Edelman gegeven naam van de fase ‘primaire variabiliteit’ is eigenlijk wat verwarrend – in deze fase is er immers alleen sprake van variatie.

Het is belangrijk te beseffen dat bij het merendeel van kinderen met onhandige motoriek of DCD er geen sprake is van een beschadiging van het brein.

De movement units zijn kinematisch gedefinieerde eenheden, waarbij elke movement unit uit een acceleratie en de daaropvolgende deceleratie bestaat.37
