Samenvatting

Tot in de jaren zeventig werd verondersteld dat vooral de hoeveelheid plaque en niet zozeer de samenstelling ervan bepalend was voor het ontstaan van parodontitis (aspecifieke plaquetheorie). Halverwege de jaren zeventig rapporteerden verschillende orale microbiologen een duidelijke specifieke samenstelling van de subgingivale plaque voor de verschillende typen parodontale infecties (specifieke plaquetheorie).
