20 Immunologische reacties bij parodontitis

Samenvatting

Parodontitis is een ontsteking van de steunweefsels van de tanden en kiezen. De ontsteking ontstaat en wordt onderhouden door micro-organismen in de tandplaque die zich als een biofilm op tand- en worteloppervlak hebben georganiseerd. Vooral als de biofilm enige maturatie vertoont, bevinden zich hierin veel gramnegatieve, vaak anaerobe bacteriesoorten. Het lijkt erop dat juist deze bacterietypen de ontstekingsreactie in de parodontale weefsels bevorderen en een bacteriële menginfectie veroorzaken. In dit hoofdstuk wordt een globaal overzicht gegeven van de immunologische reacties die een rol spelen bij parodontitis (Ebersole, 1990; Gemmell e.a., 1997; Kornman e.a., 1997; Page e.a., 1997; Kinane e.a., 1999; Darveau, 2000; Ebersole & Cappelli, 2000; Ebersole e.a., 2001; Janeway e.a., 2001; Kinane & Lappin, 2001; Podmore e.a., 2001; Roitt e.a., 2001; Seymour & Gemmell, 2001; Gemmell e.a., 2002).
