2 Gezondheid van de wereldbevolking

Samenvatting

De gezondheid van mensen in Nederland en andere hoge-inkomenslanden is beter dan ooit, maar vaak vergeten we hoe kwetsbaar deze is, en hoe afhankelijk van wereldwijde ontwikkelingen die op korte of lange termijn onze gezondheid kunnen bedreigen. Omgekeerd staan we weinig stil bij de vraag welk effect onze eigen levensstandaard en levensstijl hebben op de gezondheid van mensen die elders op de wereld in ongunstiger omstandigheden leven dan wij. Die onderlinge afhankelijkheid neemt steeds verder toe door de globalisering: een voortdurend proces van wereldwijde economische, sociale, culturele en politieke integratie. Deze integratie komt voort uit een steeds verfijnder en steeds omvattender wereldwijde arbeidsdeling, en wordt versterkt door de voortgaande liberalisering van de wereldhandel waarbij barrières voor de uitwisseling van hulpstoffen, goederen en diensten, mensen en informatie steeds verder worden afgebroken.
