Samenvatting

Osteoporose is een conditie van het bot waarbij de botmineraaldichtheid (BMD) is verminderd en de botstructuur slechter van kwaliteit is geworden. Osteoporose is een min of meer fysiologisch proces dat voorkomt bij ongeveer een derde van de blanke vrouwen boven de vijftig jaar oud. Als de menstruatie stopt, vermindert de botdichtheid sneller dan voorheen het geval was. Als de botdichtheid beneden een bepaalde waarde komt, spreekt men van osteoporose. Het gevolg is dat het bot gemakkelijker breekt.

Bij een T-score wordt de BMD vergeleken met de gemiddelde botdichtheid van een gezonde vrouw rond 35 jaar. Bij een Z-score wordt de BMD vergeleken met de gemiddelde botdichtheid van personen van dezelfde leeftijd.
