Samenvatting

In een ziekenhuis overlijden jaarlijks veel mensen. Iemand heeft wel eens gesteld: ‘Zoveel bedden, zoveel doden per jaar’. Ook in ons ziekenhuis sterven mensen. Dat is dus ‘normaal’. Toen ik in 1999 voorzitter van de Raad van Bestuur van de Reinier de Graaf Groep (RdGG) werd, komend vanuit een ander deel van de zorgwereld, had ik op de een of andere manier een besef van onmacht rondom het sterftecijfer van het ziekenhuis. Incidenteel zal er misschien eens wat ‘fout’ gaan, waarna passende acties in gang worden gezet, maar voor de rest is het een ‘fact of life’ dat mensen (ook in ziekenhuizen) overlijden. In het kader van ons kwaliteitsbeleid had ik toch de wens om hier iets aan te doen.
