In een boek over acute geneeskunde hoort ook een stuk over opgeschaalde hulpverlening en over hulpverlening onder bijzondere omstandigheden. Opgeschaalde zorg kan gedefinieerd worden als de zorg aan slachtoffers van een ramp of crisis. De verleende zorg is acute zorg zoals die in normale situaties verleend wordt, maar in een ander perspectief: de zorgbehoefte is vaak - zeker in het begin - groter dan het zorgaanbod. Dit vraagt om een andere aanpak (damage control only) en een andere, meer hiërarchische aansturing. Vanuit ziekenhuisperspectief bekeken kan er, naast een externe oorzaak, ook sprake zijn van een interne oorzaak binnen het ziekenhuis die leidt tot een dergelijk probleem. Deze situatie wordt calamiteit genoemd. …
