Samenvatting

De oude patiënt verschilt fysiek op meerdere punten van de jonge(re) patiënt. Deze verschillen worden niet alleen door de leeftijd verklaard. Er zijn ouderen van 80 jaar die zonder gebruik van medicatie zeer actief door het leven gaan, en 70-jarigen die met veel aandoeningen en pillen zorgafhankelijk en aan huis gekluisterd zijn. Om voor het begrip toch een aanduiding van leeftijden te geven, kan globaal worden gezegd dat een kwetsbare oudere patiënt (of geriatrische patiënt; zie verderop) zelden jonger is dan 70 jaar. Als er in dit hoofdstuk gesproken wordt over ‘de jongere patiënt’, dan wordt daarmee bedoeld een patiënt tot ongeveer 55 jaar.
