D Traumatische dwarslaesie bij kinderen

Samenvatting

Uitgangspunt bij de huidige revalidatie van dwarslaesiepatiënten is de patiënt te stimuleren zo snel mogelijk te gaan doen wat hij zelf kan. In Nederland streeft men ernaar dat de patiënt pulmonaal en circulatoir stabiel is en verblijft hij tot die tijd in het ziekenhuis om vervolgens – meestal binnen enkele weken na het primaire letsel – over te gaan naar de kliniek van een revalidatiecentrum.¹ De behandeling van dwarslaesiepatiënten vraagt bij uitstek een multidisciplinaire benadering. Door de complexiteit van problemen is samenwerking tussen verschillende disciplines, zoals ergo- en fysiotherapie, vaak onontbeerlijk. In Nederland wordt wat betreft organisatie en literatuur weinig specifieke aandacht besteed aan de behandeling van kinderen met een dwarslaesie, mogelijk door de lage incidentie en de beperkte mogelijkheden om de kennis omtrent deze diagnosegroep te bundelen. Gezien de problematiek die zich bij volwassenen die op (zeer) jonge leeftijd een dwarslaesie krijgen in de loop van hun leven kan voordoen, lijkt het van groot belang hier reeds in de primaire fase aandacht aan te besteden.²
