12 Fecale incontinentie bij ouderen: beoordeling en behandeling

Samenvatting

Fecale incontinentie (FI) is bij ouderen een veelvoorkomende hygiënische handicap met een aanzienlijke financiële en relationele impact. De toenemende levensverwachting zorgt voor een stijging van het aantal fecaal incontinente ouderen. Als gevolg van het ongemak dat FI met zich brengt is het de tweede meest voorkomende reden voor hospitalisatie of plaatsing in een rust- en verzorgingstehuis. Onbehandelde fecale incontinentie kan behalve een ernstige psychosociale impact op de bejaarde leiden tot een langere hospitalisatie of een langdurige behandeling. FI vereist een multidisciplinaire, individueel aangepaste aanpak rekening houdend met de oorzaak van de problematiek. Er heerst een gebrek aan kennis over bestaande therapieën.
