Samenvatting

Een mucocele is een goedaardige, met mucus (slijmerig speeksel) gevulde zwelling in de mondholte die uitgaat van de speekselklieren. De laesie is zacht en pijnloos, fluctueert, heeft een glad oppervlak en de kleur kan variëren van diepblauw tot normaal roze. Indien de mucocele zich in de mondbodem bevindt, spreekt men over een ranula (rana = kikker), omdat de zwelling lijkt op de luchtzak van een kikker. De mucocele is naast het bijtfibroom een van de meest voorkomende goedaardige wekedelenzwellingen in de mond.1
