Samenvatting

Het woord ‘pterygium’ is afkomstig van het Griekse woord pterygion, dat letterlijk ‘vleugeltje’ betekent. Het is een afwijking waarbij de conjunctiva als een driehoekige, gevasculariseerde membraan in de oppervlakkige lagen van de cornea groeit (figuur 101.1). Het pterygium is meestal gelokaliseerd aan de nasale zijde van het oog, maar komt ook temporaal voor.1-3
