Samenvatting

Wat bepaalt het prestatievermogen in de wielersport? Het lijkt een simpele vraag, maar deze vraag is zeker niet gemakkelijk te beantwoorden. De wielersport kent een groot aantal disciplines, variërend in wedstrijdduur van zo’n 10 seconden tot 21 dagen. Er zijn verschillende disciplines te onderscheiden: baan, weg, mountainbike, veldrijden en fietscross. Al deze disciplines kennen vaak weer subdisciplines zoals tijdritten, criteriums, klassiekers en meerdaagse wedstrijden. Voor elk van deze onderdelen bepalen specifieke factoren de uiteindelijke prestatie.

Het hartminuutvolume is de hoeveelheid bloed die per minuut kan worden rondgepompt; het is het product van hartfrequentie en slagvolume van het hart.

Efficiëntie is de hoeveelheid arbeid (watt) die een renner per verbruikte liter zuurstof kan leveren. Hoe hoger het aantal geleverde watts per opgenomen liter zuurstof, hoe hoger de efficiëntie.
