Samenvatting

  • In rustspeeksel is fosfaat de belangrijkste buffer, en in mindere mate bicarbonaat. In gestimuleerd speeksel is de bicarbonaatconcentratie en daarmee de zuurneutraliserende capaciteit verhoogd.
  • De pH van mondbodemspeeksel is minder sterk afhankelijk van de secretiesnelheid dan die van parotisspeeksel.
  • Bij een lage speekselsecretie is de spoelwerking, de zuurneutraliserende en de remineraliserende werking van speeksel verlaagd. Een lage speekselsecretie vormt daarom een risicofactor voor cariës en erosie.
