Abstract

Tastzin wordt in The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary gedefinieerd als dat zintuig waarmee een stoffelijk voorwerp wordt waargenomen door ermee in contact te komen via enig deel van het lichaam, het meest algemene van de lichaamszintuigen, verspreid over alle delen van de huid, maar, bij mensen, vooral ontwikkeld in de vingertoppen en de lippen. Onder de betekenis van het woord staat een illustratief citaat uit 1599 waarin met poëtische, wijze woorden de betekenis van het zintuig wordt benadrukt: By touch the first pure qualities we learn Which quicken all things … (Door aanraking ondervinden we de eerste zuivere waarden, waardoor alle dingen tot leven komen …)
