24. Speeksel als diagnostische vloeistof

Samenvatting

  • Speekselonderzoek wordt gebruikt voor de diagnose van speekselklieraandoeningen zoals het syndroom van Sjögren. De progressie van het syndroom van Sjögren kan met speekseltesten worden vervolgd.
  • In speeksel kunnen antilichamen tegen hiv, hepatitis en tuberculose worden aangetoond. Deze testen, die berusten op een ja/nee-uitslag, zijn in de praktijk zeer waardevol.
  • Van een aantal steroïdhormonen, onder andere cortisol en sommige geslachtshormonen correleert de speekselconcenratie met de concentratie van het vrije hormoon in bloed.
  • Van een groot aantal geneesmiddelen kunnen de kinetiek en het serumniveau doelmatig worden bestudeerd in speeksel.
  • Drugsgebruik, dopinggebruik en het rookgedrag kunnen betrouwbaar in speekselmonsters worden geanalyseerd.
  • Voor forensische diagnostiek is speeksel een eenvoudig en gemakkelijk verkrijgbaar diagnosticum.
