Waarom en hoe

Samenvatting

Partnermishandeling is een ernstig probleem dat veel voorkomt bij cliënten die in behandeling zijn in de verslavingszorg. In dit artikel worden verschillende verklaringen uiteengezet voor het feit dat er zoveel overlap is tussen middelengebruik enerzijds en het plegen van partnermishandeling anderzijds. Er wordt benadrukt dat het van groot belang is plegers (en ook slachtoffers) van partnermishandeling te identificeren. Een manier om dit te doen is door gebruik te maken van de Jellinek Inventory for assessing Partner Violence (J-IPV), een vier vragen tellend screeningsinstrument. Er worden suggesties gedaan voor vervolgstappen wanneer blijkt dat de cliënt positief screent op het plegen of slachtoffer zijn van partnermishandeling. Deze dienen te beginnen bij het in kaart brengen van de aard, ernst en frequentie van partnermishandeling en het nagaan in hoeverre de cliënt pleger, slachtoffer of beiden is.
