4. Patiëntgebonden eigenschappen bij infecties en het gebruik van antimicrobiële middelen

Samenvatting

Het aantal infectieziekten neemt toe door een aantal elkaar versterkende factoren. Intensieve internationale contacten en snel transport spelen een rol. Van belang zijn ook overbevolking van de steden, zeker in opkomende markten met sloppenwijken en armoede. Verder zorgen toename van onbeschermd seksueel gedrag en intensiever gebruik van antimicrobiële middelen bij veeteelt respectievelijk voedselproductie voor problemen rond het gebruik van antimicrobiële middelen bij infecties. De ontwikkeling van nieuwe ziekteverwekkers, de transformatie van dierpathogenen naar de mens en mutaties van bekende micro-organismen zijn andere factoren. Ten slotte vindt snellere verspreiding plaats door de opwarming van de aarde, ophoping van afgevoerde producten in de grond, verspreiding via het grondwater en de achteruitgang van de kwaliteit van de gezondheidszorg in sommige landen. Een aantal aspecten is in de voorgaande hoofdstukken al aan de orde geweest. De patiëntgebonden factoren bleven nog buiten beschouwing.
