ONDERZOEK NAAR EFFECTIEVE BEHANDELINGEN IN DE PRAKTIJK

Dagelijks raken veel kinderen en jongeren betrokken bij ingrijpende gebeurtenissen. Dit kunnen eenmalige gebeurtenissen zijn, zoals een ongeluk met een auto of een brand. Daarnaast zijn ook veel kinderen slachtoffer van herhaaldelijke en langdurige traumatische ervaringen, zoals (huiselijk) geweld of (seksueel) misbruik. Het is niet duidelijk hoeveel kinderen betrokken raken bij ingrijpende gebeurtenissen. Cijfers variëren namelijk van 14% tot 68% (Copeland e.a., 2007; Alisic e.a., 2008) afhankelijk van de populatie en definitie van een traumatische gebeurtenis. Het merendeel van de kinderen die een ingrijpende gebeurtenis meemaken, ontwikkelt geen blijvende stoornis. Het is een kleine maar significante groep waarin een ingrijpende gebeurtenis tot een posttraumatische stressstoornis (PTSS) leidt. Deze stoornis kenmerkt zich door symptomen van herbelevingen, vermijding en hyperarousal. Bij kinderen leiden deze symptomen vaak tot slechtere schoolprestaties, omdat zij zich minder goed kunnen concentreren. Ook kunnen de symptomen invloed hebben op hun sociaal functioneren; kinderen trekken zich terug van hun vrienden en familie of worden sneller boos en maken vaak ruzie. Tevens is bij kinderen met PTSS vaak sprake van regressief gedrag: Een kind is aanhankelijker, wil niet meer alleen thuis blijven, of een kind dat eerst wel zindelijk was plast na de gebeurtenis weer in bed. …
