9 Spiegeltherapie in de praktijk

Samenvatting

Spiegeltherapie is het oefenen van een arm of een been met behulp van een spiegel. Het doel is pijnvermindering en/of motorische revalidatie. Het werkingsmechanisme is nog niet volledig opgehelderd, maar wel is duidelijk dat visuele feedback, zoals verkregen wordt door het kijken in de spiegel, de hersenen activeert. Er zijn tot dusver aanwijzingen dat spiegeltherapie een positief effect heeft bij verschillende aandoeningen, zoals amputatie, CRPS I, CVA en na handchirurgie, maar veel onderzoek heeft slechts geringe bewijskracht. Spiegeltherapie lijkt meer effect te hebben als het wordt gecombineerd met motor imagery-programma’s. Hoewel de ontwikkeling en vooral ook de praktische uitvoering van spiegeltherapie nog in de kinderschoenen staat, is het een goedkope en gemakkelijk uitvoerbare behandeling, waarmee een aantal patiënten goed geholpen lijkt te kunnen worden. Verder onderzoek is zeker gerechtvaardigd.
