20 Eetproblemen in de adolescentie

Samenvatting

Wie aan adolescenten met eetproblemen denkt, denkt vermoedelijk eerst aan anorexia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is een ernstige eetstoornis die bij ongeveer een half procent van de meisjes en jonge vrouwen voorkomt. Meisjes met anorexia nervosa vermageren extreem, omdat ze veel te weinig eten. Maar de klassieke anorexia nervosa is een relatief zeldzame eetstoornis en naast anorexia nervosa zijn er tal van varianten en andere eetproblemen die adolescenten kunnen treffen. Deze eetproblemen zijn vaak minder bekend en niet altijd zichtbaar. Sommige adolescenten hebben last van eetbuien, dat zijn momenten waarop ze uitzonderlijk veel en snel eten. Ze hebben die eetaanvallen niet onder controle; ze ‘moeten’ als het ware eten. Andere adolescenten hebben geen eetbuien maar eten meestal te veel, waardoor ze dikker worden. En weer anderen hebben het allebei: zij eten meestal te veel en hebben ook eetbuien. Eetproblemen gaan soms wel en soms niet gepaard met een afwijkend gewicht (te dik of te dun). Dus ook iemand met een normaal gewicht kan een eetprobleem hebben. Soms eet een adolescent te weinig, maar net niet weinig genoeg om van anorexia nervosa te kunnen spreken. Eetproblemen variëren in ernst; bij sommige adolescenten is het probleem zo ernstig dat professionele hulp nodig is.
