Samenvatting

Beeldvorming en beeldverwerking spelen een essentiële rol in de cardiologie. In de afgelopen decennia hebben de technologische ontwikkelingen een enorme groei doorgemaakt. Daarbij valt vooral op de transitie van doorgaans analoge technieken naar digitale technieken, met als gevolg grote verbeteringen in uitwissel- en opslagmogelijkheden van de beelden, verbeteringen in beeldkwaliteit en in het bijzonder ontwikkelingen van tweedimensionale (2D) naar driedimensionale (3D) en vierdimensionale technieken (4D), dat wil zeggen de drie spatiële dimensies (x, y en z) plus de tijd. Vooral de ontwikkelingen in de magnetische resonantietechnieken (MRI) en ‘multislice computed tomography’ (MSCT) zijn van grote invloed geweest op de cardiovasculaire research en klinische toepassingen. Hierbij wordt de verwachting gewekt dat met deze technieken wellicht alle informatie in één opnamesessie kan worden verkregen (de zogenoemde ‘one-stop-shop’-opname en -analyse). Met de toenemende grootte van allerlei datasets wordt het ook steeds belangrijker dat adequate visualisatieprogramma’s beschikbaar komen, alsmede analytische pakketten om kwantitatieve beoordelingen mogelijk te maken, in plaats van de conventionele kwalitatieve beoordelingen gebaseerd op zuiver visuele interpretaties.
