Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk wordt stilgestaan bij het concept ‘risicofactor’ dat toepassingen heeft op individueel en op collectief niveau. In volgende hoofdstukken wordt dit concept verder uitgediept met betrekking tot bloeddruk, lipiden en glucosemetabolisme. Dit alles, samen met de kennis van de epidemiologie van hart- en vaatziekten, vormt de basis van de preventieve cardiologie. Laat het echter duidelijk zijn dat daarbij niet alle hart- en vaatziekten worden beoogd; het betreft preventie van klinische entiteiten waarvan de pathofysiologie gebaseerd is op atherosclerose van de arteriële vaatwand en abnormale trombusvorming.
