6. Het opheffen van bewegingsbeperkingen, contracturen en deformiteiten

Abstract

Het ontstaan van contracturen in spieren en gewrichten kan eigenlijk altijd voorkómen worden als de therapeutische procedures en activiteiten die in de vorige hoofdstukken beschreven zijn, onmiddellijk vanaf het begin zorgvuldig worden uitgevoerd. Ook kan de abnormale mechanische spanning in het zenuwstelsel zo gering mogelijk gehouden worden en kan de, als gevolg van het aanvankelijke letsel, ontstane spanning gemobiliseerd worden om de volledige bewegingsuitslag weer te verkrijgen. De rampzalige lichamelijke en psychische consequenties van contracturen maken het vermijden ervan tot een dwingende noodzaak. Preventie wordt vooral belangrijk, omdat de ervaring heeft aangetoond dat, hoewel contracturen van de grote spieren en gewrichten wel opgeheven kunnen worden, permanente handicaps kunnen blijven bestaan, bijvoorbeeld in de fijne motoriek van de hand en de vingers.
