Meervoudig onverzadigde vetzuren en de vroege ontwikkeling van het brein

Samenvatting

Sinds jaar en dag besteden wetenschap, voedingsindustrie en media veel aandacht aan de verschillende soorten vetzuren in de voeding. Vooral de omega-3 en -6 lange keten meervoudig onverzadigde vetzuren (hierna lcp's genoemd, de afkorting voor Long-Chain Polyunsaturated fatty acids) zijn inmiddels bij het grote publiek bekend. In de jaren negentig kwam een grote productie van wetenschappelijke artikelen op gang over de vermeende positieve effecten van lcp's in de voeding. Men liet zich vooral inspireren door het feit dat de lcp's in borstvoeding het gunstige effect van borstvoeding op de ontwikkeling van het kind kon verklaren ten opzichte van kinderen die standaard flesvoeding kregen zonder lcp's.
