Abstract
According to the cognitive theory, social phobics underestimate their social skills and overestimate the risk of rejection by others. Self–awareness theory assumes that social phobics are excessively self–focused. As a result, their perception of how others view them is mainly based on (negative) self–perceptions. The purpose of cognitive–behaviour therapy for social phobia is to help patients to develop realistic self–impressions as well as realistic ideas about how other view and judge them. In order to establish cognitive change, attentional training, Socratic questioning, experiments, and roleplays are applied. The focus of the therapy is on shifting to externally focused processing of information.
