21. Maligne beentumoren

Samenvatting

Maligne tumoren die uitgaan van het skelet zijn zeldzaam. In Nederland worden nog geen 150 gevallen per jaar vastgesteld. Zelfs voor deskundigen kan het erg moeilijk zijn uit te maken of men te maken heeft met een maligne bottumor (en dan met welke) of met een metastase van een primaire maligniteit elders, een goedaardig gezwel, dysplasie of reactief proces. Goede klinische gegevens, adequate röntgenologische afbeeldingen en representatief histologisch materiaal zijn daarbij als regel noodzakelijk, en samenwerking tussen de behandelend arts, radioloog en patholoog is essentieel. Om de ervaring in Nederland te bundelen, functioneert sinds 1953 de Commissie voor Beentumoren,¹ Commissie voor Beentumoren, afdeling Radiologie, LUMC, Leiden; www.beentumoren.nl die inmiddels gegevens verzameld heeft over bijna 15.000 patiënten met goed- of kwaadaardige gezwellen, dan wel tumorachtige processen van het skelet. Het verdient daarom aanbeveling deze commissie te raadplegen alvorens tot diagnostische of therapeutische ingrepen over te gaan. Schijnbaar kleine afwijkingen van de hierbij geldende regels kunnen namelijk grote en onaangename gevolgen hebben voor uiteindelijke therapeutische mogelijkheden en uitkomst op de lange termijn.
