Treatment of Orthostatic Hypotension

Aging and Drug Therapy

Part of the book series: Ettore Majorana International Science Series ((PSLI))

Abstract

A critical component of the aging process is the inability to maintain homeostasis. Orthostatic (postural) hypotension (OH) is a good example of homeostatic failure which may be due to aging or to disease but is not infrequently predominantly iatrogenic. It is a serious disorder with potentially catastrophic complications including falls, fractures, infarction of brain and heart, immobility and increasing dependency. Orthostatic, hypotension is not a single nosological entity and the clinical classification, pathology, biochemistry and treatment remain a challenge.1
