4. Ernstige hypodontie

Inleiding

Het aantal aanwezige gebitselementen wordt vaak gebruikt als een indicator voor de mondgezondheid. In 1992 kondigde de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) aan, dat een van hun doelstellingen voor het jaar 2000 was: voor iedereen een functioneel, esthetisch gebit met ten minste twintig gebitselementen gedurende het hele leven, zonder enige prothetische voorziening. Dit blijkt niet alleen een ambitieus doel voor ontwikkelingslanden. In Nederland had in 1992 naar schatting 23% van de Nederlanders een volledig edentate mandibula en/of maxilla. Dit percentage neemt overigens zowel in België als Nederland snel af en was in het jaar 2000 rond de 16% en in 2009 12%, met enige regionale verschillen. Bovendien nemen de verschillen in de man-vrouwverhouding af. Voorheen droegen vrouwen vaker een volledige gebitsprothese, de meest recente cijfers geven aan dat dit voor mannen en vrouwen ongeveer gelijk is (Statline (CBS), 2010; Gezondheidsenquête België, 2008).
