18 Vatbaarheid voor parodontitis

Samenvatting

Parodontitis is een multifactoriële ziekte, dat wil zeggen dat verschillende risico’s zijn vastgesteld voor deze aandoening (Page e.a., 1997). Een risicofactor voor parodontitis wordt gedefinieerd als een factor (kan zowel een omgevings- als gedrags- of biologische factor zijn) die aanwezig is voordat de ziekte zich voordoet en waarvan de relatie tot de ziekte bevestigd is in longitudinale studies. De aanwezigheid van een dergelijke risicofactor verhoogt dus de kans op het ontstaan van de ziekte, terwijl de afwezigheid van de risicofactor de kans juist verkleint (Norderyd, 1998).
